Ruapehu rates struck

Rates for the Ruapehu District for 1992-93 were struck last Friday. At their full council meeting last Friday the council heard that there were no objections received to the rates, which were advertised last week. The Council will collect less in total in rates from all wards in the district, though variations in property owners' valuations may lead to variations in individual rate demands. The Northern wards will see the biggest rate reduction as their separate roading rate has dropped. Waimarino 's

roading rate was kept at the same level, the council decided, to pay for much-needed maintenance. Cr Don Lawson voted against the resolution to pass the rates. He said he

must do so to be consistent, after repeatedly opposing the district's promotion rate. Cr Lawson opposed the rate because he felt it was unfair to commercial and industrial ratepayers.

Cr Doug Bennett also voted against the rates, saying he felt after such a good year financially the council had an opportunity to follow with a more substantial rate reduction.
