Thieves target skiers' cars

Thieves stole more than $12,000 worth of property from cars parked in the Ohakune Junction area on the weekend. Police urge people to either secure their property in their houses or chalets at night, or if property has to be left in the car, to cover it from view from outside or lock it in the boot. • A car parked in the Junction area was broken into between 10pm Friday night and 1am Saturday morning and property worth $2100 stolen, including clothing, a camera and sunglasses. • A van parked in the Turoa Lodge car park was broken into Sunday morning and property valued at $2300, including a pair of skis, ski bag, ski boots, poles, gloves plus two pairs of ski hire boots. • Between 10pm Friday and 1am Saturday a car parked in Mangawhero Terrace was broken into and property worth $5500 stolen. The haul included two cameras, a Pentax SFX SLR worth $1300, and an Olympus AZ1 worth $600, plus down sleeping bags and clothing. • Between 10pm Saturday and 2am Sunday a car parked in Old Station Road was broken into and a 35mm Ricoh camera stolen along with clothing worth $2200. • Stolen from a car belonging to Turoa Ski Resort on the weekend was the registration plate "Turoa 1".
