Fire Saffetv Hints in ^ the Electricity yp Shortaqe * * Put candles in stable holders or containers well away from curtains and other flammable things * Keep matches, candles and lighters well away from children * Use only the correct wicks in kerosene lamps and heaters * Have old electric or kerosene heaters checked by an authorised dealer or service person before use. * Turn off electric blankets, heaters, stoves and elements during power cuts. * Turn off electric appliances when not in use * Have the chimney swept * Get the chimney checked and swept if it hasn't been used for a while * Block off unused fireplaces to stop draughts - do not stuff paper or other materiai up the chimney. * Take care if using LPG camping stoves indoors. * Use only recommended insulation blankets from an electrical supply authority to wrap electric hot water cylinders - do not put any blanket or other materiai over or around a gas hot water cylinder. * Never use flammable liquids to start barbecues or fires TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY Install a smoke alarm Check the backup battery in a mains powered smoke aiarm Plan your escape - practise how everyone will get out of the house in a fire and where you will meet.
