Raetihi country day crawlies!

BY

RIC

A fine day, plenty of stalls, competitions and displays all helped to make a success of Raetihi's Saturday country market day. Organised by the Raetihi promotions group to celebrate the opening of the Lotto agency in town, the day began with the local pony club riding their horses leading a parade of 11 trucks representing local transport firms, the Waimarino Rest Home float and a fire engine through the main street of town. Displays included wood chopping by Mike Chaytor and Ken Peince; the fire brigade cutting a car open to demonstrate how their new rescue cutters work; table tennis club members Steve Gray and Charles Mariekura were challenged and this was won by Don Robinson and the junior members gave a display of their skills. In the needle-in-haystack competition, 44 prizes were up for grabs and the top prize of Bungy-jumping was won by Ivan Hall junior. Maureen Bright was the winner of the peggysquare competition. The fancy dress was judged by Jenny Dobson and the winner of a trip for two to the Agrodome in Rotorua was won by Kate Woodhouse. Proving very popular was the crayfish competition and it was a clean sweep by Shaun and Michelle Fredericksen, being first, second and third. Their biggest cray was 20 centimetres long. Prizes also went to two children with the

smallest cray of 12 cm long. The crayfish were then donated to have for supper at the Cabaret that night. There was no need for anyone to go hungry on the day as there were Chinese meals, plenty of sausage sizzles and a

hangi. That evening the steak meal at the Ruapehu Hotel proved very popular. The band from Hamilton 'Country Boyz' entertained the crowd in the street through the day. The auction went well as did the quick-fire raf-

fles and stall-holders were very pleased with the response. Ruapehu District Mayor, Garrick Workman said it was the biggest crowd he had seen in town for many years and this was achieved by the town

pulling together to make the day the success it - was. Bob Kerr, from Wellington, well known illustrator of children's books, was visiting Raetihi for the weekend and said after spending a Turn to page 2
