Ruapehu speech makers win top trophies
Ruapehu College fared very well in the regional Korimako speech competitions held in New Plymouth last Thursday, sweeping the pool in the Maori speech sections. Winning first place in the senior Maori speech competition was Ch6 Wilson; Awhina Edwards was placed third in the senior English section; Pikimai Mareikura was first in the junior Maori speech section and Paul Calaghan was commended for his efforts in junior English. Presented to Ruapehu College principal Harry Cast on Friday morning was the 'Taranaki Nui Tonu' trophy, won by Che in the Pei Te Hurinui - Jones competition. Pikimai won the
'Rawhiti Ihaka' competition. Following their wins the pair will represent the region in the national speech competition to be held in Hastings in September. "This is the first time the junior and senior Maori speech sections have been won by one school, and it is the first time Ruapehu College has brought home a trophy," said Mr Cast. This was from 20 participating schools, the largest group of any regional finals in the country, and by Ruapehu which was one of the smallest schools represented. The group who went to the speech competitions left at 5am Thursday Turn to page 2

"With that sort of result in these competitions there has to be community support and support from the home," said teacher Merrilyn George. "I'm really grateful for the parents' support because this would not have happened without it."
