Waiouru golfers on a roll

Waiouru s hopes of winning the B grade Pennants Competition are soaring after Saturday's win against Foxton Golf Club. Foxton is considered one of the top teams in the competition but were beaten on the Tawhero golf course (Wanganui) by 9 to 5. Last season the Waiouru team came third in the same competition. This year's team includes eight members who played for the pennants trophy last year along with Phil Gardyne and Mike Matheson. Waiouru's membership
has risen this year to 130. Much interest was generated by the Club's major tournament in February, the Mountain Classic. The ladies section was won by Karen Devine of Waiouru and the men's by Keith Johnson of Wanganui. Many novices gained valuable competition experience from the tournament and have now developed into intermediate players. Waiouru has the distinction of being the highest 18 hole golf course in New Zealand. A pond and meandering creek make a number of
the holes both interesting and very demanding. Club days are mainly on Saturdays but president Peter Pitts (387-6583),
club captain Paul Creedy (387-6382) and the other members are eager to welcome visitors at any time.
