within Tongariro National Park, which is within the Ruapehu District, is valued at $2,000,000. While this valuation has little effect on the general rate of the district, it leads to

a drop in the promotion rate from 0.47 cents in the dollar of land value to 0.40 cents. Taumarunui councillors Don Lawson and Graeme Cosford tried unsuccessfully to have

the promotion and development rate deleted from the 1992-93 Annual Plan at this month's full council meeting. Mr Lawson, again Turn to page 2

Promo rate

From page 1 claiming the rate was unfair in that it saw people who happen to own commercial or industrial land paying more than others towards the district's promotion and development. Other councillors disagreed, saying other ratepayers such as farmers were already paying more than urban commercial ratepayers towards promotion and development and that the rate was a way to even it out. (The district's promotion and development is partly funded from the special rate and partly from the general rate).
