Water plant start delay
Ohakune's new water treatment plant will now be handed over to the Ruapehu District Council on 31 July, after a manifold cap failed on 1 July. The raw water manifold, which feeds the three pumps which push water through the filters, was manufactured to the specifications of Water Systems, the company building the plant. The plant room was flooded to 300mm after the failure. The latest information from the council was that the plant's commissioning phase would restart yesterday, 13 July. Agreement has been reached with King Country Energy to use the ripple control system for the plant. The cost of the power supply without ripple control is 12.68 cents per unit compared to 5.31 cents per unit for ripple control power. This will save about $4900 nett annually, according to the council's June Activities Report. The power savings would pay for the installation of the equipment over an 18-month period, said the report.
