TLC for Carrot
A small group of volunteers went to work last week to replace plants killed or stolen from the Big Carrot site at the entrance to Ohakune. Led by Peter Hammond, who was behind the original establishment of the big carrot and its park and play area, the group planted various small shrubs and ground-cover plants in the rockeries. "I've got a vested interest in the Carrot park, having put quite a bit of work into it beforfe," said Peter. "It will be good to see it looking good again - it's been neglected in the past few years." Many of the park's shrubs and plants had been stolen on two separate occasions, and some had been knocked back from over-spraying by council staff, said Peter. "Since the council amalgamation I think the town's reserves have gone down hill. I would like to see an improvement - maybe it takes time for new personnel to settle in." He said it seemed some staff training would help. Fifty new plants, donated by Peter, have been put in, covering a selection of seasonal colour.
