Community service rewarded

BY

JAN

SAVELL

Sergeant David Billmore received the Chief of General Staffs Commendation on Friday 12 June. Major General Tony Birks presented the award at the Waiouru Camp Parade. Sgt Billmore has spent most of the past seven years in Waiouru -based units and his contribution to the Waiouru Community is recognised in the award. The citation reads: "Sergeant Billmore's unselfish devotion of his personal leisure time to young people in Waiouru and to Service sportsmen renders him a very worthy recipient. "As a member of the Waiouru Lions Club, he has applied himself particularly to those activities supporting children's groups in Waiouru. He is an assistant cub leader and takes an active role in planning and the organization of aetivi-

ties within that group. He is also involved in the Waiouru Youth Club to an extent well beyond that normally associated with his appointment as club treasurer. "Sgt Billmore is perhaps best known for his contribution to the area of junior sport. He has initiated, organized and run soccer and athletics for children in the five to 12 year age group on weekends and after work. His efforts have encouraged many of Waiouru's children into activities which are constructive.

He has been largely successful in overcoming lack of finance, facilities, equipment and initially, parental input. "Sgt Billmore's community involvement is furthered by his role as player/coach for the Waiouru Men's Soccer Team, selector of the New Zealand Army Soccer Team and coach for the Combined Services Soccer Team." "Sergeant Billmore's contributions are made in addition to his normal military work. His appointment at Army Training Group Support Unit's Workshop is a demanding one and his efforts at work are similar to those outside his work environment." Sergeant Billmore enlisted into the New Zealand Army from the British Army in 1984. He is married with two children.
