Locals want dam...

The Waimarino needs the fresh water lake that was to be part of the proposed Karioi power scheme. That is the view of a number of Ohakune people, who have launched a petition in support of the inclusion of the lake, formed from the waters of the Tokiahuru Stream. Petition instigator Paul Scarf said the lake is essential for the area's future, for "every reason". "We need it for tourism, for more habitat for wildlife, for a place for locals to go to for a picnic." Copies of the petition are available to be signed by supporters at Ohakune Tyres & Energy Centre (BP), The Ruapehu Visitors Centre, Berry's Bookshop, the Powderhorn and at the Ruapehu Bulletin office.
