Soccer
Playing their first competition game, Ruapehu faced Wanganui High School at Wanganui's Wembley Park recently. Pre-competition games had indicated that High School would be the most difficult game. Ruapehu should have taken the lead 15 minutes from the start when after a skirmish in the penalty area Aeneas O'Sullivan found himself with no-one to beat but his shot missed the goal. Caleb Tumataroa did score about five minutes later with a low left foot shot giving the keeper no chance. Neither side was showing any real ascendency when High School levelled the score just before half time. In an attempt to force their play Ruapehu pushed a defender forward in the second half. It seemed to pay early dividends when Avinesh Sharma scored early on. Ruapehu started to control the game for the first time. Shortly after came the best team goal so far this season with play building through from the defence and passing to no less than six players before Caleb Tumataroa found the net. High School seemed so demoralized by that goal that they allowed a repeat, this time from Andrew Murdie within a minute. One further goal to each side before full time saw the final score at 5 - 2 to Ruapehu a score they will be pleased with, Matthew Fetzer again impressed in goal as did player of the match, Avinesh Sharma controlling the mid field.
