Hunt for elderly
A pig hunting competition is planned for 13 and 14 June, with pork being gifted to senior citizens organisations in Ohakune and Raetihi, to be distributed to elderly folk in the Waimarino. The event is being sponsored by Carmichael Transport. The Waimarino Pig Hunting Club was formed in 1983 with the main objective being to promote and maintain the sport of safe pig hunting in the Waimarino. The club now has a membership of 65 hunting members and urges all budding hunters to join the club and participate in the sport. As well as being involved in club hunts, members supply wild pork to various fundraising organisations, local schools and maraes. The club is in-debted to Winstone Pulp International, who allow members access into Waimarino Forests every fortnight through the winter months. Because of the limited areas available for public hunting, the club would be severely restricted without the support of WPI and the forestry management of Terry Tapp and Shane Harvey.
