Alan Saunders, an apprentice plumber and gas fitter for Waiouru Serco, has received the top apprentice award from Waikato Polytechnic. •The Engineering and Construction Department of the Waikato Polytechnic congratulated Alan on winning the "Greenstyle Tap Award" for the best apprentice in year two, among applicants from the Central North Island. For Alan's first year he averaged 96% pass for 13 subjects. For his second
year he spent three weeks at Polytechnic and averaged 80% and A grades. Alan said when he opened the letter from the Polytechnic he was stunned. He said he couldn't believe he had won the award. He is a third-year apprentice and his contract for Serco expires in 12 months. Alan is the first plumbing apprentice Serco has employed. "I hope I've proved to them it was a good decision to take me on," he said.
