DoC looks to Rangataua for mountain biking trails

Local Department of Conservation staff are working to signpost a series of mountain biking trails in Rangataua Forest, and have called for comment from local riders. Conservation officer Rob McCallum said park staff want to encourage people to use appropriate trails for mountain biking, and so they are looking at the old logging tracks in Rangataua Forest. Trails of different difficulty levels are being marked. The first and easiest would be from the Ohakune Ranger Station out to Rangataua on the Dreadnought Road. The second level would be a circuit of the Rangataua Forest tracks and the third - the most difficult and muddiest - would take in some of the internal trails. Mr McCallum is keen to hear from local riders on what type of terrain they like, where they like to ride and why, so as to help DoC set up suitable trails. He said the aim of the trails, which will be marked, is to provide safe challenging rides mainly for visiting riders but also locals. He can be contacted at the Ohakune Ranger Station, 3858 578.
