Banks replies to police concern

Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman has received the following reply from police minister John Banks, to his letters regarding inadequate Waimarino police numbers: • Dear Mr Workman I write in reply to your letter of 27 April 1992 concerning policing in Waimarino. I have been advised by the Commissioner of Police that the vacancy at Ohakune for a CIB member has not been filled despite nationwide advertising. The Wanganui Police administration has arranged for a police officer to be trained as a Detective at Taihape for an eventual transfer to Ohakune. A position for a constable at Ohakune has now been advertised and Police are hopeful that a suitable person will be found. This means that there will be a sergeant

and four constables at Ohakune and one constable at Raetihi. In addition the CIB trainee based at Taihape, along with a detective sergeant, will be giving coverage for more serious criminal matters that may arise in Ohakune. I am advised that Taihape does not have 11 policemen but seven. This area is the main Station for the Taihape subarea which controls

Ohakune, Raetihi and Waiouru. Taihape's Station numbers have been dropping over recent years while Ohakune's has been increasing and an additional constable is being made available to Ohakune in the next two years from the extra 900 promised by me. Thank you for your interest in the matter of policing in the Waimarino and it is

pleasing to notice recent success by the Ohakune Police in apprehending persons responsible for

local dishonesty offences.

Hon John

Banks

Minister of Police
