Policing petition launched
At its meeting last week members of the Ohakune Community Development Team (OCDT) expressed concern about the amount of crime in the area (as reported in last week's Bulletin) and the effects of such criminal activity on the image of the township... it would negate every thing the Community Development Team is planning to do to promote Ohakune. The question of extra policing was discussed and the launching of a
petition to obtain extra police was proposed. However, instead of a petition at this stage it was decided that the OCDT would join with the Ruapehu District Council and local business organisations - such as the Ruapehu South Business Association - in sending letters to the Minister of Police and Tourism, Mr John Banks, pointing out the incompatibility between crime and tourism and asking for an additional police presence in Ohakune at least during
the coming ski season. Only by eliminating crime or reducing criminal activity - particularly burglaries, breaking and theft of property - can Ohakune's future development as a friendly, welcoming tourist resort be assured.
