Whakapapa to be switched on soon
New reticulation on the Whakapapa Skifield should be all completed after an all-day shutdown programmed for Wednesday 27 May, according to King Country Energy chief engineer Colin Martin. He told the May board meeting that the snow arrived the day before board staff were able to finish the cable laying and jointing, after months of waiting for last season's snow to melt sufficiently to allow the cable laying to begin. "By next Wednesday we should be able to leave Whakapapa to the skiers." The new reticulation has pushed mains sup-
ply higher up the Whakapapa side, but the honour for the highest mains supply of electricity in New Zealand, possibly in the South Pacific, still remains with Turoa Skifield. Last year King Country Energy installed mains supply to a point 2,100m above sea level on the Turoa field. The directors were told that there is still some diesel generation on the Whakapapa side, in the National Downhill area. Chairperson Ken Street said the Whakapapa project was a very good effort by the staff involved. "They have. shown they are very skilled in high level
reticulation."
