Pupils invade Army kitchens!

BY

JO

HOWIE

Seventy standard 3 & 4 school children visited the Catering School in Waiouru. The children are half way through a 3 week unit on cooking. The children were supervised and instructed by army cooks to prepare the dough and cook a variety of scones and pikelets. The co-ordina-tors for the cooking session were Lt Barbara Smith, and Warrant Officer Class One Bradley. The cooks instructing the children were: Sgt Godfrey, Sgt Betts, Sgt Bennet, Sgt Hodge. The

children' s teachers, Trish Masson, and Heather Tipene said this was a part of a science and language unit on cooking. Trish Masson said it is an integrated unit where the children don't just learn to cook, but they have been reading recipes and books about food, writing recipes, learning about healthy food and a good diet, healthy preparation of food, the science factor on what happens to cer-

tain foods when cooked, and different types of ingredients used for cooking. To start the unit last week the children cooked a barbecue and have since baked biscuits, pizzas and cakes. Next week they plan to make bread and home made spaghetti, having an expert spaghetti maker to demonstrate the art of whirling spaghetti around the room.
