BY
JOHOWIE
Taihape held its annual Gumboot Day on 21 April, attracting over 1500 people, local and visitors. The day was action packed with a great variety of stalls, competitions including the famous gumboot throwing competition, and entertainment. Included in the day's activities was an aerobatic display by the Royal Air Force Strikemasters, and another display by Rangitikei
Air Services top-dress-ing fraternity. The Army provided a static display, and assisted in preparations and helped clean up afterwards. The organising and supporting unit for the display was Waiouru Workshops, who have the Freedom of the Town of T aihape, and are often involved in local activities. On display was the 816 Wrecker 'Tow Truck', a weapons display, and an Armoured Personnel Carrier. The unit co-ordinator,
Lieutenant Mark Townsend said there was a lot of interest from school children and local farmers. "By having the display for the local community, it makes our equipment easy to touch and climb on, and they can ask questions in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere." "It's a good opportunity to cement good-will with a neighbouring community which we are involved with, " Capt. Townsend said.
