Second shot at hiring marketing manager

A marketing manager for the Ruapehu District should be appointed by the end of April. In his report to the Council Promotions and Development subcommittee, general manager Cliff Houston said the position had been re-ad-vertised through a firm of management consultants and a "good short list of candidates" selected. Following the first advertisement procedure, there were no candidates who "exactly meet our specifications," said Mr Houston. The subcommittee had asked Mr Houston to report to them on the

possibility of contracting out the marketing work for the council, rather than appoint a marketing manager. In that report Mr Houston said while there was a pool of marketing expertise in the district only some of the marketing tasks could be handled that way. "However contracting out (parts) ... of a marketing plan does not address the fundamental issue of how an appropriate marketing plan is constructed in the first place," said Mr Houston. He said if the plan is to be of benefit to all parts of the district it

needs to be centralized and co-ordinated rather than being split up or being handed to an organisation which has "much firmer roots in one part of the District than another". It had been suggested that Taumarunui Development Incorporation could take on the council's district marketing. "The Council' s approach to marketing, if it is to gain community acceptance, must be that of an agency acting in a co-ordinating role." He said the council could not afford the overall cost of marketing the district but must co-or-dinate and facilitate the

activities of private businesses to ensure "that marketing thrusts are all driven in the same direction."
