Hydrants sealed over
BYJULJE NATION Ohakune's volunteer firemen are unhappy 1 with the current state of hydrants within the town. Waimarino Community Board member and volunteer fireman Ben Goddard expressed concern at last week's community board meeting at the number of currently inoperable fire hydrants in Ohakune. Of those inspected in Goldfinch and Miro Streets, between 15-20 per cent were able to be utilised immediately, he said, while with the rest "there would be trouble." Problems arose where hydrant covers were tarsealed over during road maintenance.
"There seems to have been a general let-down * in house-keeping (on the Council's part.) It is a shame that it has got to this state," said Mr Goddard. He acknowledged that the problem was being addressed by the Ruapehu District Council, with recent clearing and road marking being undertaken, "but there is still a long way to go before it is 100 per cent." Further lists of areas needing attention compiled by the Fire Service and endorsed by Fire Command Headquarters in Wanganui, would be forthcoming to the District Council he said.
