Primary schools swim

Last Friday the Primary District School S'wimming sports were held in Waiouru. Although all schools in the Ruapehu District were invited to attend, only four Waiouru, Ohakune, Raetihi and Orautoha were able to field teams. The swimming events were organised into age groups, involving children from standard two to form two. Waiouru's Deputy Principal, Murray MacGibbon, the organiser, said he was pleased with the day's competition. He said some heats were run as finals because of reduced numbers due to absent schools. "The most important aspect today is to encourage children to have a go and to enjoy themselves," Murray said.

He said the Waiouru children dominated the results because of the large number of children and easy access to the pool. In the school's physical education programme Waiouru hopes to use the pool through all seasons. Results: 1 Length Freestyle - 12 years and over; Boys - N Gupwell, P Manson. C Wise.
