New club president
Major Phil Gibbons is the new president for the Waiouru Rugby and Netball Club. Major Gibbons, an ex Lock no. 8 Wanganui representative player and an enthusiastic rugby supporter, is looking forward to the season. He said his aim
is to continue a good working relationship with Rugby League and to encourage Netball players, families and members of the community to become involved with the club. To implement this he will continue the usual rugby and netball player
of the day prizes to the Waiouru teams and visiting teams. The senior Waiouru team will play in the senior Wanganui competition, with many of last years players still in Waiouru and available to play. The coach is Tom Hullena; assistant coach is Jim Ward and club Captain is Dick Wixon. As well as the senior team, Waiouru is also fielding three reserve teams, a colts team and one netball team has entered the Taihape competition. Major Gibbons said the netball girls are looking for a coach, and a manager is needed for the colts and the senior team. The Club is entering into a major sponsorship deal. Local community organisations are sponsoring individual teams, in particular the Oasis has offered a considerable amount of money. Major Gibbons said the club will continue to hold fund raising activities, the main activity being a concert by the American Group The Drifters on 25 June. Army inter regional rugby and netball competitions will be held in Waiouru during the month of August, where army teams will be selected.
