Safer Raetihi playground soon

Raetihi's play area will be upgraded with an emphasis on safety, following a serious accident at the grounds last month. A Raetihi boy suffered serious head injuries after falling from play equipment onto concrete. The Waimarino Community Board has put upgrading work for the play area on the top of its 'wish list' for work to be carried out by the council in the 1992-93 Annual Plan.

Ruapehu District Council operations director John Murrihy said his staff were looking at the best ways to do the work and price options. He said because of the way the playground is built, with a lot of concrete equipment bases, it would be quite expensive to fix. "We are certainly concerned about it as well," said Mr Murrihy, referring to his staff. "If the board hadn't put it in their submission we would have."
