The Ruapehu College Student Council held their first official meeting on Tuesday last week. The council is an executive student body made up of senior students. Head Boy and Head Girl being the chairpeople, Whanau leaders their deputies and voluntary year five students. Two senior staff, Mrs George and Mr Parker, are the staff involved. Their main function is to be spokesperson for all students to the Principal Mr Harry Cast, putting forward reasonable ideas for change and any fundraising ventures. A sub-committee of the Student Council is the Class Council. This is made up of 3rd and 4th form representatives with Deputy Head Boy and Girl being the chairpeople as well as two teachers, Mr Laurenson and Mrs Voon. This committee covers the Junior input, reporting back to the Student Council. During the first meeting chairpersons for each section were elected: sports - Geoffery Pitts; social - Mario Mareikura; environment - Cindy Evans; liaison (Community Public Relations) - Che Wilson; publicity - Awhina Edwards. Up and coming projects will be landscaping between the netball

courts and the library and fundraising for new sports gear. Debating On 10 March three College students travelled to Taumaranui High School to represent the College in debating. With the help of Mr Mackay and five researchers Ruapehu's debaters took the negative point of view in the argument that 'Our present political system is better than proportional representation'. The Ruapehu speakers were Jannine Maru, Che Wilson and Jenny Frew. It was a close debate that was enjoyed by all, with Taumaranui High eventually taking it out. A good effort was made by the students with it being Jannine and Che's first competitive debate, which was described as a 'Good Experience'. Athletics Forty students travelled to Wanganui on Thursday 19 March to eompete in the Wanganui Athletics Interschool Competition. These results are all unofficial and some may be missing. The first 4 placings are included: Juniors: Charmaine Oh, 3rd 100m; Jessica Pope, lst, 1500m; Larissa Green, 2nd, 300m, Vanessa Parker, 2nd, Discus; Nicola Cast, lst, Long Jump; Shannon Taura, 3rd, Shot Putt; Aroha Williams. 2nd.

Shot Putt; James Cleary, 3rd, High Jump; Michael Hammond, 4th, Discus. Seniors: Awhina Edwards, 2nd, Shot Putt, 2nd, Discus; Cindy Evans, 3rd, 100m, 3rd, 200m, 4th, Triple Jump; Coral Rahi, 4th Long Jump; Mario Mareikura, 3rd, Long Jump, 3rd, 200m, 4th, 100m, 4th, High Jump; Lee Akapita, 3rd, 100m; Simon Grossart, 2nd, High Jump. The Junior Boys came 3rd in the 4 x 100m relav.
