Pulp smell explained
• Winstone Pulp would like to reply to June Bates questions regarding the smells emanating from the Karioi Pulp Mill. The sulphur type smell that can be detected on occasions from the mill does not come from the pulping process but from the effluent treatment ponds. Bacteria breaking down the sludge in the aeration and secondary settling stage generates odorous gasses. These gasses can be smelled at extremely low concentrations and at these concentrations do not
pose any documented health risk. We are currently trialing an alternative treatment system with the approval of the Regional Authority. If this is successful, this should reduce or eliminate the smell. If June Bates, or any others want further clarification on these issues I am more than happy to discuss these with them directly. Our postal address is PO Box 48, Ohakune and our phone number is Ohakune 385-8545.
