Obituary: Evangeline Augusta Hansen

Eva was bom in Levin 29 April 1909 and came to Raetihi in 1938. She was a community minded person and had a happy nature, always talking to every one and was affectionately known to many people as 'Grandma." Eva's many and varied interests included outdoor and indoor bowls, bridge and the Raetihi town hall committee. She was very keen fund raiser for various sports groups. She often dressed dolls, crocheted rugs and made toys for raffles. All the sewing was done by hanckand all of Eva's grandchildren are proud owners of a corcheted rug or Humpty Dumpty toy made by her. For the school she raised funds for football boots for children who

could not afford to buy them. A member of both Raetihi and Ohakune senior citizens clubs, Eva could often be heard to tell a joke. A love of singing often found here around a piano singing and she make a record in 1948 called "Melodies". Eva was well known for the concerts she ran in the Raetihi picture theatre. As well as teaching the children to sing she made the costumes. Any profit made from these went to the R.S.A of which she was a life member in the Woman's section and a gold badge holder. Many people will remember Eva's cooking. She started cooking at the Waimarino Hotel where she was employed by the Bryer's family. When the Raetihi Hotel opened she was them employed there. She also did catering for the golf club, Cosmopolitan club, R.S.A. and for weddings. In 1982 Eva received from the rotary club a certificate of appreciation for 40 years service to every worth while venture in the community. Eva is survived by her children Avery (Auckland) Betty (Orini) Pat and Eric (Raetihi) and 17 grandchildren, 47 great grand children and two great great grandchildren.
