River tragedy

Tragedy struck an Ohakune family when their young son died after being swept away in a flooded river following a car accident on Saturday. Patrick Wharry, two years eleven months, was with his mother, Francis Wharry and sister Rachel, six, when the car crashed into a bridge and then into the swollen Pungapunga River near Ngapuke, 15 km east of Taumarunui at about 5pm. Mrs Wharry managed to get herself and the two children out of the car, but then the children were swept away. At 7.15pm the young girl was found by searchers - local firemen and police - about 100 metres downstream, where she had managed to climb up the river bank. At 1.15 am on Sunday morning, searchers found the body of young Patrick near where Rachel was found.
