Leslie George Nutting
Leslie Nutting passed away at his home in Raetihi on 5 March after a long illness. Mr Nutting, a retired officer of the British Army, was born 25 December 1917 at Chatham, Kent, England. He first came to New Zealand with his family as a one year old, spending seven years in Waihi where his father worked as a train driver in the gold fields. Les and his family returned to England in 1924. At 16 he joined the Navy, but after two years service, being too young for promotion, bought his way out of the Navy and joined the Army. Les attained the rank of major, serving with the 12 Royal Lancers, Royal Signals and in the United Nations, Belgian Congo peace keeping force. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1964, he returned to New Zealand. Moving to Raetihi in June 1988, Les and his wife Jo settled comfortably into Waimarino life. His main interest was radio and he continued transmissions to his ham radio colleagues right up until his death. Les offered assistance to many lost yachties and maintained radio contact with them when most needed. He is survived by his wife Jo and children Valerie, Penelope, Jonathon and Rowena. A small funeral service was held at the Waimarino RSA on 7 March 1992.
