Kindy teachers balk at bulk funding

Waiouru kindergarten teachers attended a stop work meeting in Marton on 12 February, along with colleagues from Marton, Hunterville and Bulls. They met to discuss bulk funding of staff salaries in kindergartens which is to become compulsory from 1 March, despite strong opposition from both teachers and most employing authorities.
The teachers said they fear the funding will be reduced under this scheme, and that monies allocated for teaching salaries may be spent in other areas. This may result in less qualified staff being employed, leading to a reduction in children's learning opportunities. The teachers said a day of action is being planned to highlight their opposition to the implementation of bulk funding.
