Clouds dump on A&P
But still worthwhile for hardy folk
The worst weather in years did not deter the surprising number of people who turned out to the Raetihi Showgrounds to support this year's A&P Show. And horse event entries were up on previous years, especially in the pony entries. The highlight of the day was indisputably the appearance of the DB Draught Clydesdales, who raised a round of applause from the crowds that flocked to the perimeter of the arena to watch Driver Nick van der Sande put
them through their paces. Sunday's show-jump-ing events were forced to cancel due to the wet conditions underfoot, while organisers say the events may be re-sched-uled for a later date. A&P committee spokesperson Bernice Frost said numbers registered in pony events were "well up" on previous shows as well as good stock entries, and reasonable numbers in other equestrian events. "It was just a shame for the kids and ponies with the wet condi-
tions", said Mrs Frost. Gate-takings were also surprising she said, with around $800 collected at the end of the day. Top quality entries were received in the hand-craft and floral section of the competition, and huge numbers of entries in home-brew and wine categories. This year's school childrens' section was won by Raetihi School. Mrs Frost said next year's A&P Show will feature a centennary parade marking Raetihi's 100 years with a number of ideas in the pipeline.
