College column
BYCORALRAfflAND AWHNA EDWARDS Throughout the 1992 Ruapehu College year, it is intended that those students doing 6th Form Media Studies with Mr Blackburn contribute a weekly item for the Ruapehu Bulletin to keep the public informed on what is happening at College. This is designed to also be a learning exercise, as part of the Media Studies syllabus. This is the first such article for 1992.
The year started off on a very positive note for Ruapehu College. A 77% pass rate in Bursary Examinations was achieved, and School Certificate passes were well above average. On Friday 7 February there was a powhiri for all new pupils and Mr Ian McKay, the new English Department Head. Mr Cast welcomed all those on behalf of the Tangata Whenua and Che Wilson added a supporting speech in Te Reo Maori. Mr Richie
Akapita spoke on behalf of the Manuhiri. This year Ruapehu College has had a major increase to the roll. Numbers are up by at least 40 pupils. Year five students participated in the annual leadership camp recently which is run by the College. The objective of the camp is to extend existing qualities in students to include leadership, survival techniques in the bush and learning to work as a team. On Wednesday afternoon, 12 February, a sports afternoon was planned. The Junior school participated in a variety of activities organised by Mr Knight and the Senior School took part in the Police Fitness Test programme organised by the Police. It was a beautiful afternoon and there were excellent performances turned out by Warwick Hays, Mario Mareikura and Lee Akapita of the Senior School.
