More steam soon

Ruapehu Bulletin readers in the Waimarino will have another chance of glimpsing the spectacular era of steam on Thursday when two steam trains and 20 vintage passenger rail cars pass through Waiouru, Tangiwai, Rangataua, Ohakune and Horopito. They will travel through as two separate trains - each hauled by a steam locomotive - on their northbound run on Thursday morning and then, after turning around at Taumarunui, they will return as a

combined unit in the afternoon. The trains are part of the Pan Pacific Classic Vintage Car Rally which is bringing about 1,000 car enthusiasts - many from overseas - to the Horopito Vintage Car Museum this Thursday. The two steam locomotives (Ka 945 and Ja 1234) and carriages have been provided by Steam Incorporated of Paekakariki. The first northbound steam locomotive, Ka 945, and hauling 12 passenger cars, is due to pass through Ohakune

without stopping at 10.45am. It will be followed by Ja 1234, hauling 8 carriages at 11.15am. This train will stop in Ohakune for watering and will depart for Horopito at 11.30am arriving at Horopito at 12.45pm. After dropping off their car enthusiast passengers at Horopito, both trains will continue on to Taumarunui with other passengers, to turn around and reconnect as one single unit with the two steam Turn page 4

Next week (Thursday 20 February) the steam train 'Diana' (Ja 1250), which readers would have seen last Sunday, will be travelling back through the Waimarino to it's home base at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway yard near Auckland. Details and times will be in next week's Bulletin.
