'Standby' help available

Standby has been operating in the Waimarino for the past five years and during this time has provided assistance following various requests for help. Standby is a nonprofit organisation

which offers low cost home help. Some examples of the service offered include assistance to young families, care for the elderly, post-op-erative home help and baby-sitting in emergencies. Although all commit-

tee work is voluntary, helpers do receive a taxable wage. The charge to the client is subsidised because of the financial assistance from various funding bodies to whom Standby is extremely grateful. Where long distances

are involved travelling expenses sometimes have to be included in the cost to the client. Standby hope to be available for extra work following a request from the Manawatu- Wanganui Area Health Board to assist with their sugges-

tion to establish a home-care support service for elderly people. Standby is available Monday to Friday and Saturday until 4pm. Should an emergency arise over a weekend they will endeavour to make help available. People who require assistance or who would like to add their names to the helpers list are asked to phone 3854095 or 3854-053.
