Bowls shows up club rivalry

By

Lance

Langdon

In an attempt to initiate people into the gentlemen's sport of Outdoor Bowls, the Raetihi Bowling Club recently

dusted out its Trophy Cabinet and found the 'R C Davies' Trophy. This was donated in 1945 to the Club and the trophy has never been played

for. Knowing the rivalry that exists between the Waimarino Club Inc. and the Raetihi Cosmopolitan Club on the sporting fields, both Clubs were invited to compete for the glory of being the first winners of the Trophy. Each Club was repre-

sented by six teams of four players. During the games it was easy to spot the uninitiated, with bowls going down the greens at times at the most peculiar of angles. It was also obvious that the dress requirements for this stately game had been suspended for the day, some attire being

highly questionable. After much good sportsmanship and bowling arms and bodies being fortified by the friendly bar staff, the Waimarino Club took the Trophy by one end over the Cosmopolitan Club.
