Ruatiti road works ok

The council will carry out some maintenance on the Ruatiti Airstrip Road, despite there being a gate across the road. The road crosses the Ruatiti Airstrip and the gates are closed when this is used by aircraft, for safety reasons. The council's usual policy is to not maintain roads beyond gates, but has decided to make an exception in this case, although work to be carried out will be on a limited basis. Board member Win-

ston Oliver objected to the limits placed on the maintenance work, saying it should receive the same maintenance as any other road. Other members disagreed, saying if the road were to be maintained fully, the landowners should first bring it up to council standard. Mr Oliver said the council had a legal obligation to maintain the road to the same standard as any other road. Looking at the issue on a purely legal basis,

the road would have to be either closed at the gate, or the airstrip removed, said Mr Peach. The board decided to

accept the recommendation and that the measures planned matched the requests of the land owners affected.
