Gas for huts
Woodburning fires could be a thing of the past in Tongariro National Park. Four huts in the park, Keteahi, Waihohonu, Oturere and Mangatepopo, have recently been equipped with gas heating. The change to gas will save the Department of Conservajf tion considerable time §| and money. | "LPG is a clean hurupi ing and safe fuel. Firewood creates a mess | around the huts, it f| doesn't smell good and I the cost of supplying it and delivery by helicopter cost more than $10,000 last year," said
, Neil Small, Conservation Officer at Turangi. "Chopping firewood is becoming a lost art," Mr Small said, "and having gas means we won't be replacing so many broken axe handles!" The gas cylinders will be restocked three times a year. It is estimated the cost of installation will be recovered in savings within two years. The Department of Conservation operates a 'carry in carry out' rubbish policy. The change to gas heating will mean that combustible rubbish will have to be carried out as well.
