Waiouru health to be debated

"What health care services does Waiouru, as a community want?". That is the question that will be discussed in depth at a public meeting to be held on Tuesday 3 December at the Waiouru Primary School Hall, 7.30pm. The main objective of
the meeting is to put together a submission to the government on the type of health services Waiouru people need and how they should be provided. Waiouru, as part of the Ruapehu District, is unique in that it boarders the Manawatu/Wanganui and Waikato Area Health Boards. At present
health care such as the community midwife, public health nurse, district nurse, ambulance and free dental care for school children are all provided by the Manawatu/Wanganui Area Health Board. But because of Waiouru's remoteness it is generally felt that Waiouru could do with more.
"Decisions that will directly effect the community must be made by the community," says Helen Twist, acting chairperson of Waiouru Health Watch Committee."We could stand to loose everything if those boundaries are changed, therefore we must let officials know what we want and why."
This discussion is phase one of the "Core Debate" on health issues, a new initiative on health care services that is planned to change the way New Zealand looks after its health. Guest speakers will include Garrick Workman, Ruapehu District Council; and Sue Hines Turnpage 2
