One Raetihi building
• Recent reports in the Bulletin and Wanganui Chronicle have given people a wrong impression on what the Raetihi Promotions Group is doing. Our aim is to : improve the appearance of Seddon Street to make Raetihi an attractive town for visitors to drive into and give local people a greater sense of pride in their town. Recent reports must have been taken from the group's original idea to form an investment group and possibly build a new shopping complex. This did not get support so the idea was ,put aside. There is only one building the group wished to demolish, the old blue butchers' shop, and only if this could be obtained cheaply. Negotiations are still under way but Council has been approached for rate relief just in case we can obtain the building. There is still no guarantee of this happening. We do not want to pull down a whole lot of buildings and leave level sections - only one, and there seems to be opposition to this so all options will be looked at before any decision is made. What we are doing that is very positive is working on a deal with a major paint wholesaler to supply us with paint at very good prices and a local Task Force Scheme run under the Council to get a painting programme going. Details are not yet finalised but if it ever stops raining
Raetihi should get some fresh paint for a spruceup over the summer.
