Jute in, plastic out
Ohakune New World is one of the first supermarkets in the country to stock customers' reusable jute shopping bags. The 'Just Jute' bags are imported by Trade Aid from a women's cooperative in Bangladesh. Even though shoppers have to initially buy the bags Alan Murdie of Ohakune New World is confident they will catch on. "More and more people are concerned about the environment. Using these bags is a practical way to cut down on waste," says Alan Murdie.
"It's also good to know we are helping the village women who make the bags to earn a living" The 'Just Jute' bags are the centre-piece of a nationwide campaign by Trade Aid to promote natural products from Bangladesh. They symbolise the 'greenness' of jute - reusable, biodegradable and made from a naturally renewable resource. "We appreciate Ohakune New World supermarket stocking the bags and hope they become popular in Ohakune," says Trade Aid Co-ordinator Rod Donald.
