Bogus receipt
James Manuel Honana, 26, unemployed of Ohakune, and Henrietta Maihi, 29, cook of Ohakune were remanded to appear in the Ohakune District Court on 14 November after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiring to defeat the course of justice by attempting to procure a bogus cash sale receipt in order to "cover their tracks." A search of Maihi's home in Carter Terrace located 10 dozen quartsized bottles of beer which had earlier been stolen from the Ohakune-Karioi Rugby Club.
When she was unable to produce a receipt for the beer she and defendant Honana colluded to obtain a cash sale receipt to the value of $329 from the Ohakune Hotel. This receipt was then presented as evidence that the stolen beer had been legitimately purchased. However, because they got the dates (of the receipt) wrong, the deception was soon realised. The defendant Maihi also faces two charges of receiving and will be sentenced when she appears with Honana in Court
