Road status decision deferred
What to do about the legal status of the Mangapurua Valley Road has been deferred, awaiting information from the Department of Survey and Land Information. The Waimarino Community Board has been discussing the matter, and at least one member is concerned at the actions of the Department of Conservation. Member Winston Oliver said DoC has overstepped the mark in some of its actions in controlling the road. He said the road was not yet legally closed as far as he was aware, but that DoC had stopped use of the road by people on horses & motorbikes. "It's not a mistake by DoC - it's a deliberate act," said Mr Oliver. "They are calling it an unformed road - you don't build bridges on an unformed road. It's a formed road." Mr Oliver said the decision to close the road had never been advertised and so people had never been given a chance to object to the closure.
