School artists help Desert Gala

Eight children were awarded prizes for being the top artists in designing Desert Gala posters recently. The winners were: Re-

becca Clarke, Kemp Solomon, Melissa Harding, Ashton Tahu, Russell Quickfall, Alida Greeve, Serena Howard and Kerry Shaw. The competition was open to

the whole school. Mike Brown, the judge and the advertising member for the Desert Gala said he thought the standard was very high. All the posters were then distributed around the Waiouru community centre and in Ohakune and Taihape. Mike said the 9th November Desert Gala day is shaping up to be action packed. He said the committee is expecting over 2,500

people to attend. The committee aim to raise $10,000 which will go towards school computers, new library books, and new furnishings. The committee expect to get their revenue from stall site charges, raffles, side show takings, PTA white elephant saies, PTA refreshment stalls, gala programme saies, and hangi meal tieke ts.~' There will be 60 stalls selling a variety of

goods. sixty percent of the stall owners are from the local area, the other 40 percent are from different parts of the North Island. Mike also said there will be plenty of entertainment for the day including: pony rides, truck rides, merry go rounds, mini trike rides, mechanical bull rides, shooting gallery, karaeoke competition for children and adults,

entertainment item^ from the primary school children, and much more. "The response from the local community has been very supportive," Mike said. "The public are encouraged to buy a Gala Programme that will outline activities, en-

tertainment, and special features planned for the day. They will then enter a hourly lucky draw." The Gala also gives the opportunity for fund raising and promotion for local community groups and small business enterprises. Mike said he hopes the community will support the day.
