Council free phone

• The economic squeeze must indeed be hitting hard when the Ruapehu District Council decides that there will be no more free phone calls to its head office in Taumarunui for ratepayers. The RDC will as they always do, say it is a move to save ratepayers money but I along with many others think it is a way of silencing irate ratepayers who phone in possibly in very considerable numbers wanting to know why their areas are being allowed to deteriorate in some cases to a disgusting state. Would the RDC also please explain to us how many years the $15 that has been put on our rates to pay for National Parks sewage and water supply is to go on, we were told this was to be a loan, if this is so why have we not papers to state this and we think the RDC has no right to levy this charge without the written permission of the ratepayers. This loan was rejected by all present at a meeting in Rangatua as we were all being hit with very large bills for our own sewerage system.
