New JP sworn in
Ohakune has a new Justice of the Peace. She is Whakaarahia LuanaRose Makere Akapita. She was sworn in as a JP by Judge Watson in the Ohakune District Court last Thursday. In offering his congratulations and welcoming her to the justice system, Judge Watson said she had a very important role to play ■- in this small community where the Justice Department did not have a full-time presence. He was pleased to see that Ohakune's new JP had so much family and local community sup-
port ... the Court was full. Judge Watson outlined some of the duties associated with Justices of the Peace including sometimes sitting on the Bench to hear depositions and minor criminal charges and he particularly emphasised the importance which all Australian States attached to the signatures of NZ JPs on some official documents ... "they don't even recognise the signatures of NZ solicitors on certain documents relating to land transfers and property across the Tasman," he said.
