Badminton season report

The 1991 Badminton season started off well with a lot of enthusiasm. ~ Membership was looking good for the club. Interest was high until the middle of the season when it started to drop off for no apparent reason. The tournament in August was a great success with thanks going to sponsors arid those who gave their time to make the weekend enjoy able for all. This season was a busy one for interclub players, seeing Ohakune teams playing teams from Wanganui - Marton - Taihape - Waiouru - Taumaranui and Turangi. Ohakune entered one 'A' reserve team for the Wanganui Interclub. The team was Jocelyn Cranston, Kaye Young, Kenneth Young, Michael Edwards, Stewart Ryburn, David Brown, who had to travel to Wanganui for their games. Even though they had to face the Parapara Highway before they played, they . still came in 3rd out of c 10 teams in total, from Wanganui and Marton. All games were hard fought but with a good result. Ohakune entered two 'B' grade teams in the Wanganui Interclub. B 1; Colin Cranston, Graeme Lind, Elayne Weller, Lois Lind. B 2; Craig McDonald, Chris Bradley, Marie Cranston, Kim McCartney. Ohakune B 1 made it to the finals, but were beaten on a count back of 12 points. The team came second out of 10
teams in total. Ohakune B 2 also had some close battles and came in 6th over-all. Local Interclub between Ohakune, Waiouru and Taihape saw B, C and D grades playing off. Ohakune entered two 'B' grade teams 1 'C' grade team (Dean Smith, Greg Newell, Raylene King, Evania Rennie, Julie Oliver) 1 'D' grade team (Lindsay Cast, Stacy Cranston, Darren Norling, Karlene Hough, Mei-ling Vodn). Results for the local interclub: B Grade; 1st Ohakune 1, 2nd Taihape 1, 3rd Waiouru 1. C Grade; 1st Taihape 1, 2nd Waiouru 1, 3rd Ohakune, 4th Taihape 2. D Grade; Ohakune and Waiouru first equal. Special thanks go to Marie Cranston for the support she gave to the D Grade. Evania Rennie has shown great promise over the season. She not only has the power to hit the shuttle with force but has the skill to place the shuttle to her advantage. Evania is indeed on her way up in the sport. Ohakune also entered teams in the Juniors in Wanganui. Jocelyn, Colin and Marie took cars to Wanganui with Donna Cranston bringing home the Barker trophy and Eileen Voon and Donna Cranston bringing home the Nixon trophy. 'A' grade residentials in Wanganui saw Kenneth Young and Ian Kerr (from Wanganui) winning the men's doubles. Ohakune club champs started on Sunday 6 October with a
disappointing turn out of members. Results for singles: Kenneth Young Men's Champion, David Brown runner up, Elayne Weller Ladies Champion, Jocelyn Cranston runner up, Eileen Clarke Plate winner, Colin Cranston Men's B Grade Champion, Craig McDonald runner up, Lois Lind Ladies B Grade Champion, Kim McCartney runner up, Dean Smith Men's C Grade Champion, Greg Newell runner up, Harvey Young Plate winner, Julie Oliver Ladies C Grade Champion, Lindsay Cast Men's D Grade Champion, Stacy Cranston runner up. Special Awards: Most promising female player Evania Rennie, Most improved female player Julie Oliver, Most promising male player Lindsay Cast. Sunday 13 October saw a poor doubles turnout. A Yankie Tournament was held instead which saw Craig McDonald taking out the honours. Those present on the night all received a chocolate bar: Colin, Craig, Graeme, Dean, Lindsay, Stacy, Jocelyn, Elayne, Eileen, Lois, Paddy and Sandra. Monday 14 October was the final night and prize giving. Again turn out proved that interest has died off early. The season finished off with a meal at the Alpine Restaurant.
