Waiouru saddle club

On Sunday, Waiouru families enjoyed pony rides and a sausage sizzle at the Saddle Club. It was a day to celebrate the start of the season, and to encourage new families to become members. The Club averages 30 family members per season. The Club owns nine ponies, equipped with all necessary equipment. There are 15 other ponies and horses that are privately owned, and the owners are actively involved with the Club. It will cost $125 to gain family membership per year, or $65 per child. "This covers at least ten lessons, and the full use of equipment and ponies," said Debbie Hill, the chief instructor. "Our expenses are high. When you think about vet bills, shoeing, and upgrading equipment, it all adds up. Our aim this year is to fertilise a couple of paddocks which is estimated to cost two and a half thousand dollars." "We depend on parental assistance with fund raising, working bee days, and helping with the younger children's lessons. This way the fees can be kept to a minimum." Debbie said the Club's aim is for the children to enjoy riding, and to be aware of safety .
