Waiouru squash

BY

JO

HOWIE

The Waiouru Squash Club held a mixed open day tournament last Sunday. A barbecue lunch and refreshments were provided for the participant's families. The two squash courts in camp have recently been upgraded. The court walls have been painted, and the varnish on the floor boards has been stripped. "I hope by improving the condition of the courts, we may attract more squash players," said Brian Smith, the squash club president. "Over the last few years the club has never had much support and the club members are few. Men's squash has been non existent but Porky Brien, the club captain and I, hope to change this. "My long term goal is for Waiouru to do well at the inter-regional squash tournament. But first of all we have to look at building club membership and improving the club's profile to attract players. "To achieve this I want to start a club night and introduce a ladder. The ladder will dominate the club nights and display placings which will hopefully improve the competition. "One problem from a club perspective is anyone can play on the courts without being a club member. We need incentives to attract

players to want to be members. "We will also introduce a regular newsletter to inform club members of future activities planned," said Brian. Heather Kett, one of the organisers for ladies squash, said she would like to encourage more ladies to play. The ladies mornings are on Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 - 11:30am. Club membership is free and children

are welcome. The results of the open day tournament are: Open grade winner A Howie; runner-up B Smith; winner of the plate Willie Mclntyre; special plate MacMillan; runner-up Wendy Newman; consolation plate Fiona Jones; run-ner-up PJ Clark; best dressed, Cinda with her pink squash shoes. Best overall player of the day, Lynelle Barlow.
