Revamp for garage

Work starts next week on Ohakune's revamped BP service station, with local contractor Rowan Eves winning the tender for the job. Garage proprietor Warren Swain said about fifty per cent of the work would be carried out by local contractors. The difference for most people will be the altered forecourt which will see cars pull up to three fuel pump islands in six lanes. The cars

will face towards or away from the new shop. With the present garage shop and the flower shop removed, the forecourt will be more than double the present size, giving more space for cars to manoeuvre. The present shop is to be demolished along with the premises of the flower shop next door (Joce's Flowers is moving to the corner of Clyde and Goldfinch Streets). A new shop is to be

installed where the present tyre bay is situated. The new shop will be roughly the same size as the present one but will be rectangular, with more usable space. A new canopy is to be built, 21 metres by 15 metres, to shelter motorists calling at the garage. A new workshop, office, staff and store rooms and toilets are to be built on the land at the back of the present

flower shop. This extension will stop short of the flower shop property boundary, allowing for vehicle access right round the revamped service station. A new diesel filling pump for trucks is to be installed towards the back of the station, on Raetihi Road. This will allow trucks more space, in front of the present workshop, and free up the car forecourt.

Each of the pumps on the pump islands at the front of the station will supply super and unleaded fuel. New fuel tanks are also in the plans for the garage as is major surface sealing and concreting work. The work is expected to take until midJanuary 1992 and customers will be served at the old Cedar Service Station until the reopening of the new BP Station.
